TotalEnergies Partners with AI Startup Mistral to Enhance Energy Efficiency and Cut Emissions
French energy giant TotalEnergies has entered into a strategic partnership with AI startup Mistral to develop digital tools aimed at optimizing its energy operations, enhancing industrial performance, improving customer support, and reducing its environmental footprint.
According to TotalEnergies, the collaboration is already underway, with teams from both companies working together at their respective sites. However, no dedicated physical lab is planned. Instead, Mistral will support TotalEnergies in building an AI-powered assistant designed to:
- Support the development of new energy projects
- Recommend operational decisions for reducing emissions at industrial sites
- Enhance customer support with energy-saving solutions
“AI has enormous potential to reshape energy systems,” said Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies. “This partnership underscores our commitment to fostering a robust European tech ecosystem.”
The announcement follows Mistral’s recent release of Europe’s first AI reasoning model, designed to generate responses through logical thinking, an innovation aimed at keeping pace with leading U.S. and Chinese AI firms.
TotalEnergies began formally collaborating with external AI startups in 2022 through a program focused on increasing the profitability of its electricity business. Past collaborations have included projects such as:
- Predictive maintenance for wind turbines using AI algorithms
- Weather-based optimization of electricity trading
- Precision digital planning for future renewable energy sites
The company has also experimented with Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant, giving employees a six-month trial period to assess its practical applications.
Through its alliance with Mistral, TotalEnergies aims to accelerate digital innovation while advancing its sustainability and operational goals.
