OpenAI Launches Codex Agent to Automate Coding Tasks
OpenAI is introducing Codex, a software development assistant powered by artificial intelligence. It is designed to help engineers by taking over routine programming tasks. Although OpenAI does not say Codex will replace junior developers, the tool is intended to help them work faster and be more productive.
How Codex Works
Codex is built on a new version of ChatGPT that is optimized for code. This version is called codex one and is based on the o3 model. It improves accuracy when handling programming tasks.
Codex can pull code from GitHub, write new code, propose pull requests, and carry out each task in a separate sandbox. Most tasks are completed in one to thirty minutes, depending on how complex they are. Users can watch Codex work in real time.
After completing a task, Codex commits the changes in its own environment. It also provides proof of what it did, including terminal logs and test results, so users can review its steps.
Availability
Codex is being released to users with a ChatGPT Pro subscription. This plan costs two hundred dollars per month.
