OpenAI, Google, Anthropic Join Official US AI Vendor List

OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude have been officially added to a list of approved AI vendors, according to the U.S. government’s central purchasing agency. This move, announced Tuesday by the General Services Administration (GSA), is part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to expand AI adoption across federal agencies.

The approval is aligned with a new AI blueprint released on July 23, which aims to ease environmental restrictions and significantly increase AI exports to allied countries, helping the U.S. maintain its lead over China in advanced technologies. With this update, government agencies can now access these AI tools through a platform that already includes standardized contract terms.

According to the GSA, agencies will be able to use a wide variety of AI solutions, ranging from general research assistants built on large language models to advanced, mission-specific applications. The agency emphasized a focus on models that uphold truth, accuracy, transparency, and neutrality.

President Donald Trump has described the AI race as a defining challenge of the 21st century. His administration's AI policy includes around 90 recommendations, pushing for global AI software and hardware exports while opposing local laws that may hinder innovation. This marks a sharp shift from former President Joe Biden’s approach, which set stricter limits on the international distribution of high-end AI technologies.

The Biden administration had previously required federal agencies to implement clear safety measures when using AI, including regular monitoring and testing to ensure public welfare. He also signed an executive order aimed at encouraging fair competition and preventing misuse of AI, a directive that has now been revoked under Trump’s leadership.
