OpenAI is set to release its first open-weight language model with reasoning capabilities in the coming months,
marking its first such release since GPT-2, CEO Sam Altman announced on Monday.
Unlike open-source models, which provide full access to source code, training data, and methodologies, an open-weight language model makes its trained parameters publicly available. This allows developers to analyze and fine-tune the model for specific tasks without needing the original training data.
To shape the model’s development, OpenAI will engage with developers through a series of events. The first will take place in San Francisco in the coming weeks, followed by sessions in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. "We still have some decisions to make, so we are hosting developer events to gather feedback and later play with early prototypes," Altman shared on X.
In February, Altman outlined plans to simplify OpenAI’s AI products as part of a new development roadmap. Additionally, the company must transition to a for-profit entity by the end of the year to secure its full $40 billion funding, primarily led by SoftBank Group (9984.T), according to a source familiar with the matter.
OpenAI has emphasized that this shift to a for-profit model is necessary to acquire the capital required for developing cutting-edge AI technologies.
