OpenAI's ChatGPT Browser Project Codenamed 'Aura'

OpenAI is developing its own AI-powered web browser, currently known by the codename "Aura," following a similar path as Perplexity.

The existence of Aura was revealed by X user Tibor, who discovered references to it in the ChatGPT web app. These include terms like “is Aura,” “mini-root” (which is similar to how platforms like Android, iOS, or Electron are detected), “is Aura Sidebar,” and “in Aura.”

According to a previous report by Reuters, OpenAI is building a Chromium-based browser that aims to use generative and agent-driven AI features to change how users browse the internet.

The company has also shown interest in acquiring Chrome, particularly if Google faces setbacks in the ongoing U.S. antitrust case. Regardless of that outcome, OpenAI appears to be moving forward with developing its own browser, which could become available on multiple platforms due to Chromium’s broad compatibility.

Alongside the browser, OpenAI is also working on the next-generation GPT-5 model. This new version will integrate advances from various earlier models to enhance overall performance.

Additionally, OpenAI is experimenting with a computer agent feature built into ChatGPT’s reasoning process, although further details on that are not yet available.
