WhatsApp Stirs Backlash Over Unremovable AI Chatbot

WhatsApp Stirs Backlash Over Unremovable AI Chatbot

WhatsApp’s New AI Feature Sparks Privacy Concerns

WhatsApp has introduced an AI-powered chatbot, Meta AI, into its app—but users aren’t happy they can’t remove it. The feature, marked by a colorful blue circle on the chat screen, is said to be “entirely optional,” yet remains permanently visible.

Though Meta claims the tool helps users search, learn, and brainstorm ideas, many are frustrated by its forced presence, likening it to Microsoft's now-backtracked Recall feature. Critics argue the chatbot may serve as another way for Meta to gather user data, despite assurances that it doesn’t access private messages.

Privacy experts and users across social platforms have voiced concerns, accusing Meta of using people as test subjects. Ongoing investigations and legal challenges question the company’s data training practices—especially claims it used pirated books and scraped personal data to train its AI.

The UK’s data watchdog says it’s monitoring the situation closely, urging tech firms to respect privacy laws, especially when AI models interact with children's data.
