Pakistan's National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) has warned 39 key ministries and institutions about a "severe risk" from ongoing 'Blue Locker' ransomware attacks, which recently targeted the country's oil and gas sector.
The ransomware severely impacted Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) on August 6, just before Pakistan's Independence Day. According to an NCERT spokesman, other organizations were also attacked, but their security systems have been able to continuously detect and block the threat.
In response, Resecurity has acquired and analyzed the ransomware samples to provide insights to the cybersecurity community. PPL has also activated its internal cybersecurity protocols and is conducting a forensic analysis to assess the incident's scope and strengthen its defenses. The company stated its commitment to transparency and to safely restoring its systems.
