Connex Credit Union Breach Hits 172,000 People

Connex Credit Union Breach Hits 172,000 People

Connex ranks among the largest credit unions in Connecticut. The organization serves more than 70,000 members and manages assets exceeding $1 billion.

The Maine Attorney General’s Office has received a copy of the notification letter that Connex is sending to the 172,000 individuals whose personal data may have been compromised in files stolen from the company’s systems.

Connex stated that the breach was discovered on June 3. An investigation revealed that the attacker had access to its systems between June 2 and June 3.

The potentially stolen files contained sensitive information including names, account numbers, debit card details, Social Security numbers, and government-issued IDs used to open accounts.

Connex emphasized that there is no evidence of unauthorized access to member accounts or financial assets.

An alert is currently posted on the company’s website warning customers about scam calls and text messages that impersonate Connex employees in attempts to collect PINs, passwords, and account numbers. Whether this alert is connected to the breach remains uncertain.

The identity of the attacker is unknown, and it has not been confirmed whether the incident involved ransomware.
