Data Breach at Virginia Radiology Practice Hits 1.4 Million

Radiology Associates of Richmond has reported a significant data breach that compromised the personal and health information of more than 1.4 million people. In a notice posted on its website, the Virginia-based healthcare provider disclosed that unauthorized access to its systems occurred over several days in April 2024. More than a year after the incident, the organization confirmed that files containing personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) were among those accessed by the intruders.

While the organization stated there is no evidence that the stolen data has been misused, it is offering free credit monitoring services to individuals whose Social Security numbers were part of the exposed records.

Radiology Associates of Richmond, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, delivers medical imaging services across various hospitals, outpatient centers, and freestanding emergency facilities throughout central Virginia. The breach was listed on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) data breach portal, with the impact noted at 1,419,091 individuals. As of now, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the intrusion.

This incident comes amid a wave of healthcare-related breaches. The HHS breach tracker also recently recorded a breach at Anne Arundel Dermatology, based in Maryland, which affected approximately 1.9 million individuals.
