Tire Giant Bridgestone's Factories Hit by Cyberattack

Tire Giant Bridgestone's Factories Hit by Cyberattack

Tire manufacturer Bridgestone Americas has confirmed it is responding to a cyberattack that disrupted operations at some of its manufacturing plants. The company stated the incident has been contained and that business operations are now back to normal, though a full investigation is ongoing.

Bridgestone identified a "limited cyber incident" that affected its production. At some facilities, including two in South Carolina, employees whose work was stopped were given the option to stay for maintenance work and receive pay, or to go home without pay.

Local officials suggest the attack may have been more widespread. The mayor of Joliette, Quebec, where Bridgestone has a large plant, believes the cyberattack affected all of the company's North American factories. He said an internal memo was sent to employees.

Bridgestone has stated it does not believe any customer or employee data was affected, a sentiment echoed by the Joliette mayor after his conversations with company executives. This is the second major cybersecurity incident for Bridgestone, which also suffered a ransomware attack in 2022 attributed to the LockBit hacking group. The exact nature and full scope of this new incident remain under review.
