UnitedHealth Tech Breach Hits 192.7 Million, U.S. Data Shows

UnitedHealth Group's cyberattack on its tech unit last year impacted 192.7 million people, according to the U.S. health department.

The company had previously estimated that the hack at Change Healthcare affected 190 million people. This cyberattack, the largest healthcare data breach in U.S. history, was first disclosed in February of last year.

Hackers identifying as the "Blackcat" ransomware group infiltrated the unit, causing major disruptions to claims processing for patients and providers nationwide. A UnitedHealth spokesperson confirmed the final number of impacted individuals, noting that figures would vary by state.

The updated number of affected people was posted on a list of data breaches maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights. Information compromised in the attack is believed to include health insurance member IDs, patient diagnoses, treatment details, social security numbers, and billing codes.
