Office 365 Adds New Feature to Detect Email Bombing Attacks

Office 365 Adds New Feature to Detect Email Bombing Attacks

Microsoft is enhancing its cybersecurity capabilities by introducing Mail Bombing Detection in Microsoft Defender for Office 365, a new feature aimed at tackling the increasing threat of email bombing attacks.

This update, part of broader improvements to Microsoft Defender for Office 365, includes advanced tools designed to prevent email floods that disrupt critical communication and overload systems.

Starting from late June through early July 2025, this automated security feature will be rolled out globally. It marks a major step forward in email protection by automatically identifying and managing email bombing campaigns using advanced AI and machine learning.

The detection system works without requiring manual setup from administrators. It monitors incoming email traffic, analyzes patterns, and distinguishes between normal and suspicious email volumes.

Once suspicious messages are detected, they are sent to the Junk folder, while trusted senders remain unaffected. This ensures that important emails are delivered as usual, while potentially harmful ones are isolated.

The feature blends smoothly into existing workflows, adding an extra layer of detection without disrupting current security settings.

Security analysts and administrators will gain full visibility into email bombing events across several Microsoft 365 security tools. These include Threat Explorer, the Email entity view, Email Summary Panel, and Advanced Hunting, all of which will now display this new detection type with detailed data and insights.

However, the change also introduces compliance factors organizations need to consider. Since the system alters how emails are classified and routed, it could impact tools like Purview, audit logs, and eDiscovery by redirecting messages to Junk folders.

New detection events may also show up in compliance reports, so teams should update their monitoring and documentation processes. Security Operations teams should be informed, and internal training materials should reflect these changes. IT admins should also review Junk folder policies to match company policies and compliance needs.

This security upgrade reflects Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to stay ahead of emerging threats through smart, automated protections.

With Mail Bombing Detection enabled by default, all Office 365 users receive immediate protection, without needing extra technical steps from IT teams.
