Meta Launches AI Accelerator to Boost Sub-Saharan Innovation

Meta Launches Llama Impact Accelerator to Boost Open-Source AI Innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa

Meta has introduced the Llama Impact Accelerator program in Sub-Saharan Africa to drive open-source innovation and support the development of impactful AI solutions across the region.

The initiative will run as a series of six-week accelerator programs held in Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa. Each accelerator will provide selected startups with equity-free funding, technical training, business advisory support, hands-on mentorship, and access to local policy networks.

The program’s main objective is to help startups build scalable and socially relevant AI tools. It seeks to expand open-source AI adoption while tackling regional challenges in agriculture, healthcare, safety, financial inclusion, education, and public services.

At the end of each accelerator, participating teams will showcase their Llama-powered prototypes at a Demo Day. These presentations will be reviewed by a panel of regional and international experts, policymakers, and ecosystem leaders. Selected teams will receive funding and continued support over a six-month follow-up period that focuses on refining their products, growing their communities, and expanding into new markets.

“Africa is not just the future, it is a present filled with promise and potential. At Meta, we believe open-source AI can unlock this potential by democratizing innovation and enabling technologies that truly address community needs. With the open availability of our Llama ecosystem and investments in programs that support local tech ecosystems, we are empowering African institutions and future AI leaders to shape solutions tailored to their unique contexts,” said Balkissa Idé Siddo, Public Policy Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta.

Meta is partnering with key national innovation and AI agencies across the region, including Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy; Senegal’s Ministry of Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs; Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy; and South Africa’s Department of Public Service and Administration and Centre for Public Service Innovation. Local incubators and training organizations will also play vital roles in delivering the program.

Together, these partnerships will provide access to technical tools, expert guidance, and platforms for local developers to build essential digital infrastructure and influence AI policy development. The launch of the Llama Impact Accelerator demonstrates Meta’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable AI innovation on a global scale, while supporting Africa’s growing technology landscape.
