China launches anti-monopoly probe into Nvidia

China launches anti-monopoly probe into Nvidia

China's market regulator has announced that the U.S. computer chipmaker Nvidia has violated the country's anti-monopoly laws. The market watchdog did not provide specific details on how Nvidia breached the rules but said it would continue to investigate the matter. The investigation, which began in December of last year, is seen as the latest move in the ongoing battle between the U.S. and China over the semiconductor chip market. The U.S. has been tightening its restrictions on the sales of high-end semiconductors to Chinese companies.

Trade Talks and the TikTok Deal

This news comes as U.S. and Chinese officials held a second day of trade talks in Spain. Following the discussions, President Donald Trump hinted that a deal had been reached with China to prevent a U.S. ban on the social media app TikTok. On his social media platform, Trump stated that a deal was "reached on a 'certain' company that young people in our country very much wanted to save," adding that "they will be very happy!"

The U.S.-China talks were led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. Following the talks, Bessent said they had "very good discussions" and confirmed that trade negotiations would resume in about a month at a different location. The talks in Madrid were expected to address what chips, including those made by Nvidia, would be allowed to enter China, which connects to the ongoing investigation.

Trump's stance on the popular video-sharing app has softened since his first term in the White House, when he had initially called for the app to be banned. He has since delayed the ban three times, and his administration even launched its own official TikTok account in August.
