Google Denies Mass Gmail Password Reset Alert

Google has denied reports suggesting it issued a widespread warning for all Gmail users to reset their passwords following a supposed data breach. Several media outlets and cybersecurity firms had circulated stories claiming 2.5 billion users were urged to enable two-factor authentication and change their credentials.

In a blog post, Google clarified that these claims are false. The company emphasized that Gmail’s security systems remain robust, blocking over 99.9% of phishing and malware attempts. It encouraged users to adopt passkeys for added protection, even if login details are compromised.

Google stressed the importance of accurate reporting in cybersecurity, noting that its teams work diligently to safeguard users and communicate transparently about risks.

This incident follows a pattern of sensational but misleading stories. Earlier this year, a widely reported “historic data breach” turned out to be a repackaged collection of previously leaked credentials. Similarly, a viral claim in February 2024 about millions of smart toothbrushes being hijacked for DDoS attacks was later revealed to be purely hypothetical.
