Microsoft Edge Rolls Out Secure Password Tools for Businesses

Microsoft has officially rolled out a new Edge feature that enables employees to share passwords more securely in enterprise settings.

Called secure password deployment, this feature is now generally available for Microsoft Edge for Business users and is designed to reduce the chances of passwords being shared with unintended individuals. It supports Microsoft 365 Business Premium, E3, and E5 subscriptions, and requires either the Edge admin or Global admin role.

Microsoft noted that in many workplaces, employees still share passwords through insecure means such as sticky notes or emails. This not only exposes sensitive information but also increases the chances of misuse or unauthorized forwarding.

Secure password deployment allows administrators to distribute encrypted passwords to selected users across an organization. These passwords appear directly in the users’ Edge work profiles on managed Windows devices, enabling secure and seamless login to specified websites.

Part of the Microsoft Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center, the feature lets admins configure browser policies to manage the deployment of credentials. It builds on Edge’s existing Autofill experience with a user-friendly interface where admins can add, update, or revoke access to passwords as needed.

Passwords deployed through this method cannot be viewed, edited, or exported from the password manager (unless site permissions allow it). While technically accessible through browser developer tools, organizations can prevent this by applying the DeveloperToolsAvailability policy.

The encryption behind secure password deployment uses the Microsoft Information Protection SDK and is tied to Entra identities. This ensures that access is governed by organizational policies without requiring manual management of encryption keys.

Microsoft stated that this integration enhances Edge for Business by embedding its data protection technology directly into the browser, aligning with Zero Trust security principles and compliance needs.

To start using the feature, administrators need to open the Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center, select an existing configuration policy or create a new one, go to the Customization Settings tab, and access the Secure Password Deployment section.
