Apple Builds Custom Chips for Smart Glasses and AI Servers

Apple is developing custom chips to power upcoming devices, including its first smart glasses,

artificial intelligence servers, and new MacBooks, according to a report by Bloomberg News on Thursday.

The report, citing sources familiar with the project, said Apple has made significant progress on a chip designed specifically for its smart glasses. This signals the company’s intention to compete directly with the Ray-Ban smart glasses developed by Meta Platforms.

Other processors currently in development are expected to serve as the core components for future Macs and AI servers that will run the Apple Intelligence platform.

As part of its broader push into the AI market, Apple has started integrating on-device AI features into its latest iPhones through Apple Intelligence, a feature suite that can summarize notifications, rewrite emails, and provide access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Apple has already demonstrated strong capabilities in chip development. In February, the company introduced its first custom-designed modem chip, which connects iPhones to mobile networks. The chip for the smart glasses is reportedly based on energy-efficient designs used in the Apple Watch, rather than the more power-hungry components found in the iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

This chip is being tailored for low power consumption and for managing multiple cameras that are expected to be built into the glasses. Mass production could begin as early as the end of next year or in 2027, the report noted.

Manufacturing of the chip will be handled by Taiwan’s TSMC. If the smart glasses perform well in testing, they could be released within the next two years.

In addition, Apple is working on several new Mac chips that may be branded as the M6 and M7, according to Bloomberg.
