Scammers are impersonating procurement agents from legitimate companies to place fake orders for expensive equipment like satellite phones, laptops, GPS devices, and network switches.
Proofpoint researchers warn of a widespread scam that tricks vendors into sending goods using stolen identities and net financing options, which allow purchases with delayed payment, typically within 15 to 90 days.
This fraud, known as a Net RFQ (Request for Quote) scam, involves criminals using fake emails, stolen employee data, and detailed company information to appear legitimate. They reach out for quotes, then use the information to submit convincing orders supported by forged documents.
The scam operation involves a network of freight forwarders, rented warehouses, and money mules. Fraudsters often delay sharing a shipping address until the last minute, likely to avoid detection and arrange drop-off through third parties.
Proofpoint found that many deliveries were routed through shipping services that unknowingly send packages to countries like Nigeria and Ghana. Items frequently targeted include WiFi gear, medical devices, and high-demand electronics.
The team managed to take down 19 fraudulent domains and intercept some shipments. They urge companies to verify sender identities, especially when receiving urgent financing requests. Checking domains and calling official business numbers can help prevent losses.
