A cybercrime group known as the Lynx ransomware cartel has claimed it successfully attacked Rose Acre Farms, a major egg producer in the United States. The attackers said on their dark web blog that they have encrypted the company's data.
According to the cartel, the breach occurred late last week when they gained access to the company's networks. While no data samples were provided, the attackers claimed to have encrypted the company’s data and said they would provide proof later. Past cyberattacks on major food producers have led to supply shortages and price increases, raising concerns about the potential impact of this incident on the market.
The Lynx ransomware gang is a "ransomware-as-a-service" operation, meaning they sell their malicious software to other cybercriminals who carry out the attacks. After a successful attack, the affiliates share the ransom money with the malware developers. If a victim doesn't pay, the attackers threaten to leak the stolen data and keep the company's systems encrypted.
Since mid-2024, Lynx has reportedly victimized over 200 organizations. Some researchers believe the cartel may be a rebrand of individuals associated with the INC Ransom group. The attack on a food producer like Rose Acre Farms highlights the serious threat these groups pose to critical industries.
