Massive leak exposes health data of Russian aviation staff

Massive Data Leak from Russian Aviation Medical Center Exposes Over One Million Personal Records

Millions of highly sensitive records from the Center of Aviation Medicine (TsAM), which is owned by Russian state corporation Rostec, have been leaked online. The exposed data includes full names, phone numbers, allergies, account balances, and other personal information.

The data first appeared on a widely used leak forum on May 9, the date when Russia commemorates its victory in World War II. According to the poster, the dataset contains private information on approximately 1.1 million individuals.

While TsAM also treats private citizens, one of its main roles is to evaluate the health of aviation and flight test personnel. This means the breach could include sensitive data belonging to individuals in Russia’s aviation sector. Cybernews researchers verified that the leak appears authentic and contains as many as 250 separate data fields per person. The exposed individuals now face significant privacy risks, including possible targeting by foreign intelligence groups.

"Threat actors could use this information for identity theft, fraud, or other scams," noted the researchers. "Additionally, state-backed groups may exploit the data to gather intelligence on individuals connected to Russia’s aviation industry."

The leaked information reportedly includes:

  • Full names
  • Russian social security and pension numbers
  • Passport numbers
  • Tax identification numbers
  • Home addresses
  • Causes of death
  • Medical treatment codes
  • Consultation history

Due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, data concerning aviation personnel in Russia could be of particular value to foreign intelligence agencies. Such actors might attempt to identify individuals with health vulnerabilities and use that information for strategic advantage.

TsAM was founded in the early 1950s during the Soviet era and operates across multiple regions in Russia. It became part of Rostec in 2007. Headquartered in Moscow, Rostec oversees a range of companies, many of which support Russia’s defense industry.
