Salt Typhoon Hack: FBI Probes China-Linked Breach in US Telecoms

FBI Seeks Public Help in Unmasking China-Linked Telecom Hackers

The FBI is calling on the public to assist in identifying individuals behind an ongoing cyberattack campaign, dubbed Salt Typhoon, which has targeted U.S. telecommunications networks. According to the agency, the attackers are affiliated with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and have successfully infiltrated multiple telecom systems, stealing large volumes of sensitive data.

The Salt Typhoon campaign, which has been under federal investigation for months (Alert No. I-042425-PSA), involves the exploitation of critical infrastructure vulnerabilities. Data compromised includes call logs, private conversations involving government officials, and even information obtained via legal court orders. Officials believe the operation may extend beyond the U.S., affecting individuals and organizations globally.

This isn't the first warning about such threats. Joint alerts from the FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and other government bodies were issued in October and November 2024. In December, the agencies released a technical guide urging telecom providers to harden their systems against advanced cyber threats like Salt Typhoon.

To limit further damage, the FBI continues to collaborate with industry partners and U.S. agencies while appealing for tips from the public that could lead to the attackers' identification.

Massive Espionage Effort Unfolding

Salt Typhoon has already been linked to several large-scale breaches where PRC-backed hackers stole sensitive telecom data—especially targeting individuals involved in government and politics. While the true extent of the espionage is still unfolding, both the FBI and CISA are assisting affected companies and sharing threat intelligence to prevent future incidents.

Global Cybersecurity Push

Efforts to bolster defenses are now global. The FBI is working closely with agencies in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand to enhance security across the telecommunications sector. These collaborations focus on closing security gaps and preparing for future threats.

So far, attackers have capitalized on pre-existing vulnerabilities in telecom networks—highlighting the urgent need for improved monitoring, strong encryption, and rigorous system audits. The FBI strongly encourages telecom providers to stay vigilant, watch for suspicious behavior, and strengthen their cybersecurity infrastructure.
