Researchers from Trend Micro Taiwan and CHT Security revealed that smart buses are vulnerable to remote hacking, allowing attackers to track, control, and spy on vehicles. Their findings were presented at the DEF CON hacker conference.
The investigation began after noticing free passenger Wi-Fi. They discovered that the same router handled both public Wi-Fi and critical systems like GPS tracking, route scheduling, and driver assistance features. This lack of network separation created serious security risks.
By bypassing router authentication, hackers could access cameras, alter displays, steal data, and even breach company servers. Weak passwords and exposed protocols made it easy to manipulate GPS and speed data, potentially disrupting operations. One major flaw included an MQTT backdoor that gave remote access to bus systems.
