Steelmaker Nucor Halts Production After Cyberattack

Nucor Corporation, the largest steel manufacturer in North America, has temporarily halted

production at several of its facilities following a major cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to its IT systems.

The breach was discovered earlier this week and prompted the company to act quickly to contain the threat and protect its operations.

After identifying the intrusion, Nucor activated its incident response plan, taking potentially affected systems offline as a precaution. The company also implemented various containment, remediation, and recovery measures.

Nucor has hired top external cybersecurity experts to assist with the ongoing investigation and has informed federal law enforcement authorities.

In its regulatory filing, Nucor stated, “Upon detecting the incident, the Company began promptly taking steps to contain and respond to the incident, including activating its incident response plan, proactively taking potentially affected systems offline and implementing other containment, remediation, or recovery measures.”

Although the company has not revealed which specific facilities were affected, the shutdown has impacted multiple sites within Nucor’s extensive network of steel mills, fabrication plants, and recycling centers.

Nucor operates around 300 locations across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, employing more than 32,000 people. The company produces approximately 25% of all raw steel in the United States.

The full extent and impact of the cyberattack are still unknown. Nucor has not confirmed whether sensitive data was stolen or if ransomware was involved.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, and the company has chosen not to release further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Nucor’s rapid response included taking some production systems offline out of an abundance of caution. The company is now working on safely restarting the affected operations.

This shutdown comes amid a rise in cyber threats targeting the manufacturing sector. Recent reports show that manufacturers are among the most targeted industries due to their reliance on legacy technology and the critical role their infrastructure plays.

Industry experts warn that attacks on companies like Nucor could have significant consequences throughout the supply chain, considering the company’s role as a key steel supplier for construction, infrastructure, and manufacturing in North America.

Nucor has reassured stakeholders that it is taking all necessary steps to restore normal operations and will continue to monitor the situation as the investigation proceeds.
