Abilene, Texas Shuts Down City Systems Following Cyberattack
Abilene, Texas, was forced to shut down several internal systems on April 18, 2025, after a cyberattack caused widespread server disruptions. While emergency services remained fully functional, city officials activated their incident response plan and began working with cybersecurity experts to investigate the breach.
According to an official notice, the city's IT team quickly disconnected affected and critical systems to contain the threat. Although some services have been restored, others remain offline as a precaution. No financial irregularities have been discovered so far.
As a result of the outage, card payment systems at government offices are unavailable, prompting a temporary switch to cash, check, or online payments. The city also assured residents that no utility services would be disconnected for late payments during this period.
“We're still bringing systems and phones back online, and response times may be slower than usual,” the city stated. “We are actively monitoring for any suspicious activity and working towards a full recovery, which will take time.”
The attack comes nearly two years after a major ransomware incident struck Dallas, Texas, in May 2023, where the Royal ransomware group claimed responsibility. That breach impacted multiple city departments, including law enforcement. Similar incidents have also affected Dallas County and Wichita County, highlighting the ongoing threat facing government IT infrastructure.
