Mercury Corp., a US-based manufacturing company, recently revealed that its systems were breached by attackers who accessed sensitive personal information
including driver’s licenses and Social Security numbers.
The breach occurred in mid-February this year, with the attackers gaining unauthorized access for approximately one day. During this time, they exposed the personal details of over 3,000 individuals. According to Mercury’s breach notification letter, the compromised data included names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s licenses, and Social Security numbers (SSNs).
Although the company has not confirmed whether the stolen data was exfiltrated or misused, the exposure of personally identifiable information (PII) puts individuals at risk of identity theft. Attackers could potentially use the stolen details to open fraudulent credit accounts, file fake tax returns, or commit other crimes. More targeted phishing campaigns could also be carried out, as the stolen data pertains to individuals in specialized industries, making them more susceptible to convincing attacks.
Mercury Corp. stated that it has initiated an investigation into the incident and is taking measures to mitigate the potential risks to affected individuals. The company, formerly known as Mercury Aircraft, has a long history of manufacturing aircraft and parts, and works with major partners such as IBM, Lockheed Martin, USPS, and Kodak.
