Harrods Confirms Cyberattack, Becomes Third Major UK Retailer Hit in a Week
Harrods has confirmed it was the target of a cyberattack, making it the third major UK retailer affected by cyber threats in just one week, following similar incidents at Marks & Spencer (M&S) and Co-op.
The luxury department store reported that threat actors had attempted to gain unauthorized access to some of its systems. In a public statement, Harrods said, “We recently experienced attempts to gain unauthorised access to some of our systems. Our seasoned IT security team immediately took proactive steps to keep systems safe and, as a result, we have restricted internet access at our sites today.”
Despite the attack, Harrods assured customers that all its stores—including its flagship Knightsbridge location, H beauty outlets, and airport stores—remain open. Online shopping via harrods.com has also continued without disruption.
While Harrods has not disclosed the technical details of the attack or whether a data breach occurred, the incident adds to growing concerns as UK retailers face increasing cyber threats.
Earlier in the week, M&S suffered a cyberattack involving tactics associated with the Scattered Spider group and DragonForce ransomware, according to BleepingComputer. Around the same time, the Co-op took precautions amid its own cybersecurity breach, instructing its 70,000 employees to keep cameras on during virtual meetings, verify attendees, and avoid recording calls.
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has described the string of incidents as a “wake-up call” and confirmed it is assisting the impacted companies.
