India and U.S. Break Up $40M Cybercrime Ring

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), working with the FBI, has taken down a major cybercrime network accused of defrauding U.S. citizens of over $40 million. The operation, part of Chakra-IV, focused on illegal call centers and homes in northern India. Authorities seized ₹5.4 million in cash, dozens of devices, and key evidence. Three suspects are in custody, and investigations are ongoing to trace stolen funds and identify accomplices.

The group ran a tech support scam from 2023 to 2025, convincing victims their bank accounts were compromised. Criminals gained remote access to computers and persuaded victims to transfer money into cryptocurrency wallets they controlled. The scam exploited fear to steal millions in virtual assets.

One raid uncovered a large call center in Amritsar operating under the name M/s Digipaks The Future of Digital. Officials intercepted 34 individuals during the operation and confiscated 85 hard drives, 16 laptops, and 44 mobile phones filled with incriminating data.

A separate raid led to the arrest of a fugitive described as the kingpin of a related cyber fraud ring. He was caught at Delhi airport while attempting to flee to Nepal. This individual had evaded capture since earlier raids in May, which exposed another fraudulent call center named “FirstIdea” targeting victims in the UK, Australia, and the EU.

The CBI says the network relied heavily on cryptocurrency to launder stolen funds and is now working with INTERPOL and other agencies to follow the money trail. Officials believe this is one of the largest disruptions of a transnational cybercrime ring in India. Operation Chakra-IV will continue to focus on dismantling global cybercrime groups that exploit virtual assets.
