Marlboro-Chesterfield Pathology (MCP), a full-service anatomic pathology laboratory based
in North Carolina, was recently hit by a ransomware attack that led to the theft of personal information from many individuals.
According to a data breach notice posted on its website, MCP detected unauthorized activity on its internal IT systems on January 16, 2025. A subsequent investigation confirmed that hackers had accessed and stolen certain files.
The compromised data includes personal details such as names, addresses, dates of birth, medical treatment records, and health insurance information. The type of information exposed varies from person to person.
Earlier this week, MCP reported the breach to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), stating that 235,911 individuals were affected.
The ransomware group known as SafePay, which also targeted the business services firm Conduent recently, claimed responsibility for the attack on MCP in late January.
At this time, MCP no longer appears on SafePay’s data leak website. This absence could suggest that a ransom was paid. Healthcare data breaches frequently impact large numbers of people, with some incidents affecting millions or even tens of millions.
