Massive 7.3 Tbps DDoS Attack Hits Hosting Provide

Cloudflare has successfully mitigated another record-setting distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, which peaked at 7.3 terabits per second (Tbps).

This latest attack surpasses previous peaks recorded by Cloudflare, including incidents that reached 5.6 Tbps and 6.5 Tbps. Last month, cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs also reported that his website had been hit by a 6.3 Tbps DDoS attack.

The 7.3 Tbps assault occurred in mid-May and lasted just 45 seconds. It targeted a hosting provider and represents the largest attack of its kind recorded by Cloudflare to date.

“Hosting providers and critical internet infrastructure have increasingly become targets of DDoS attacks,” Cloudflare stated in a blog post published Thursday.

The company reported that the attack generated 37.4 terabytes of traffic within its brief duration, which is roughly equivalent to streaming more than 9,000 HD movies in under a minute.

Cloudflare explained that the attack "carpet-bombed" an average of 21,925 destination ports on a single IP address used by its customer, peaking at 34,517 ports per second. The source ports were similarly distributed.

The company revealed that more than 99 percent of the malicious traffic consisted of UDP flood attacks. The remaining 1.3 gigabits of data came from various reflection and amplification techniques, including QOTD reflection, Echo reflection, NTP reflection, Mirai UDP floods, Portmap floods, and RIPv1 amplification.

The traffic originated from over 122,000 unique IP addresses, spanning 5,400 autonomous systems and 161 different countries.
