Apple Bows to UK Laws, Drops End-to-End Cloud Encryption for the First Time

Apple has announced the removal of its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) feature in the UK, a move seen as a major shift

in its long-standing commitment to user privacy and end-to-end encryption. ADP, introduced in December 2022, extends encryption to a wide range of iCloud data, preventing Apple even under legal orders from accessing users' backups, iMessages, and other sensitive information. However, the UK government has reportedly demanded a way to access this data, leading to Apple's decision to disable ADP for new users and require existing UK users to turn it off voluntarily. The implications of this change are significant, as law enforcement agencies often rely on iCloud backups for investigations.

While Apple stated that some data, including health records, passwords, and FaceTime messaging, will remain encrypted, the removal of ADP means iCloud backups and messages could potentially be accessed and handed over to authorities upon request.

Apple's decision underscores the ongoing global battle between tech companies and governments over encryption, with the UK taking a particularly aggressive stance on data access. The UK’s Online Safety Act, which calls for enhanced law enforcement access to encrypted messages, has placed tech firms under increasing pressure. Apple has historically resisted such government interventions, famously refusing to unlock the iPhone of a San Bernardino shooter in 2016.

The company expressed grave disappointment over the UK’s move, citing rising cybersecurity threats as a reason why strong encryption is more necessary than ever. However, Apple maintains that it will never create a backdoor into its devices or services. Other tech companies, including Signal and Meta (WhatsApp’s parent company), have also clashed with UK authorities over encryption policies, with Signal threatening to leave the UK altogether. As governments continue to push for greater surveillance capabilities, the tech industry faces mounting pressure to balance security, privacy, and compliance with evolving regulations.
