China to Embed AI in School Curriculum to Drive Educational Reform and Innovation
China has announced plans to deeply integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its education system, including teaching methods, textbooks, and school curricula at all levels — from primary to higher education. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the country’s education sector and foster new avenues for innovation and economic growth.
According to an official document released on Wednesday, the Chinese Ministry of Education stated that embracing AI will help develop core skills in both teachers and students. These skills include independent thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration — all essential for nurturing a new generation of innovative talent.
The ministry also highlighted that incorporating AI will lead to more dynamic and intellectually stimulating classrooms.
This push follows recent developments in China's AI space, such as the introduction of AI courses at universities and increased student enrollment, particularly after local startup DeepSeek made global headlines in January by launching a cost-effective large language model rivaling U.S. technologies. The same month, China unveiled its first national strategy to become a "strong education nation" by 2035, with a focus on leveraging innovation to achieve that vision.
