MATLAB Dev Confirms Ransomware Caused Outage

MathWorks Confirms Ransomware Attack Behind Ongoing Outage

MathWorks, the developer of MATLAB and Simulink, has confirmed that a ransomware attack is the cause of a major service outage affecting both customer-facing and internal systems. The incident began on Sunday, May 18, and disrupted key services such as the MathWorks Cloud Center, License Center, File Exchange, and the online store.

The company, which serves more than 5 million users worldwide, reported the incident on its official status page and has notified federal law enforcement. While some services have been restored, including multi-factor authentication and single sign-on access by May 21, several issues persist. Customers have reported difficulties creating new accounts, and some users who have not signed in since October 2024 remain locked out.

MathWorks has not disclosed the identity of the attackers or confirmed whether any customer data was compromised. No ransomware group has claimed responsibility, which may indicate that the company is either negotiating with the attackers or has paid the ransom.
