Microsoft Fixes Exchange Online Error That Marked Gmail Emails as Spam

Microsoft has fixed a problem in its email system where Gmail messages were wrongly marked as spam in Exchange Online.

The issue, tracked as EX1064599 began on April 25 at 09:24 UTC. A machine learning (ML) model that helps detect risky emails had mistakenly identified normal Gmail messages as spam because they looked similar to actual spam messages. As a result, those emails were sent to users' junk folders.

Microsoft explained that the bug was in the ML model, and in an update posted on May 1, they said the problem was resolved by rolling back to an earlier version of the model that worked properly. They also noted that during the issue, admins and users could set up custom rules to prevent Gmail messages from being sent to junk.

Microsoft confirmed the issue is now fixed and they’re monitoring the system to make sure everything is stable. They also mentioned they’re working on improving the ML model to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has had similar problems. In recent months, other emails—including those from Adobe were wrongly flagged as spam, and in some cases, messages with images were even quarantined by mistake.
