Asahi Group Holdings, the company behind Japan’s top-selling beer, has publicly disclosed that a cyberattack disrupted several of its operations in Japan. The incident caused a complete halt to the brewer’s ordering and shipping activity. Furthermore, the company’s call center and customer service desk are currently unavailable to the public due to the attack.
Asahi is one of Japan’s biggest breweries, commanding roughly one-third of the domestic market and reporting nearly $20 billion USD in annual revenue in 2024. The company also owns major international brands like Peroni, Pilsner Urquell, and Grolsch across its European, Oceanian, and Southeast Asian branches.
The company’s Japanese headquarters confirmed that only its Japan-based operations were affected. Asahi stated in an online announcement that it has not confirmed any leakage of personal or customer information to external parties while the investigation is underway.
The attack reportedly began around 7 a.m. local time. Asahi apologized to its customers and business partners for the inconvenience and is actively working to restore the impacted operations. However, the company has not provided a timeline for when systems will be fully recovered. Details regarding the specific threat actor, the initial entry point, or whether a ransom demand has been issued are currently unknown, and no ransomware groups have publicly claimed responsibility.
