Anthropic has launched a web application for its popular AI coding assistant, Claude Code, allowing developers to create and manage multiple AI coding agents directly from their browser.
Web Access and Market Competition
The new web-based Claude Code is rolling out to subscribers of Anthropic’s Pro, Max $100, and Max $200 monthly plans. Pro and Max users can now access the tool on the web via claude.ai or through the Claude iOS app, navigating to the new “Code” tab.
This launch is a move by Anthropic to expand Claude Code beyond its initial command-line interface (CLI) and make the tool available wherever developers are working. The AI coding tool market is intensely competitive, with Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google, and OpenAI all offering highly performant tools. Despite the competition, Claude Code has seen tremendous success, growing tenfold in users since its May launch and now accounting for over $500 million of the company’s annualized revenue.
The Shift to Agentic AI
Anthropic product manager Cat Wu attributes the product's success largely to the company’s superior AI models, which have become a favorite among developers. Wu also notes that the team intentionally tries to "sprinkle in some fun" into the product experience.
Early AI coding tools functioned primarily as simple autocomplete features. Modern tools, including Claude Code, represent an agentic shift, allowing developers to spin up autonomous agents that handle complex coding tasks. This change is transforming the role of software engineers into one more akin to managers of AI coding assistants. Wu herself rarely writes code, instead spending her time reviewing Claude Code’s output, claiming that 90% of the Claude Code product itself was written by their AI models.
While Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently predicted that AI will soon write 90% of code for software engineers, not every developer welcomes the shift. Some studies have found that certain engineers were actually slower when using AI coding tools, potentially due to time spent prompting the AI or correcting errors in large, complex code bases.
Anthropic will continue to push Claude Code into more places, emphasizing that the CLI product will remain the most intelligent and customizable home base for their coding agents.
