Arm Holdings announced the launch of its next-generation chip designs, called Lumex, which are optimized to run artificial intelligence on mobile devices without needing an internet connection.
The new Lumex designs come in four types, ranging from less powerful, energy-efficient versions for smartwatches to a high-performance model. The most powerful design is made to run large AI models directly on high-end smartphones, eliminating the need for cloud computing.
According to Chris Bergey, a senior vice president at Arm, AI is becoming a "fundamental" part of how we use technology for things like real-time interactions and AI translation. The new designs are part of Arm's Compute Subsystems business, which aims to provide handset makers and chip designers with more ready-made technology to speed up the development of new products.
The Lumex designs are optimized for a 3-nanometer manufacturing process, which is the same technology used for Apple's new iPhone chips. Arm is holding a launch event in China because many of the world's leading handset makers, aside from Apple and Samsung, are based there.
