ChatGPT Mix-Up: Users Report Swapped Conversations

ChatGPT Mix-Up: Users Report Swapped Conversations

Several ChatGPT users have recently reported a rare and concerning glitch that appears to cause responses to be swapped between unrelated users.

A Reddit user, “Striking-Professional1,” shared an example on the r/ChatGPT subreddit, saying they asked ChatGPT for help with their code, but instead received a political response: “Yes, Hamas is officially designated as a terrorist organization by the following entities,” followed by a list of countries. The reply had no relation to the user's original coding question.

Other Reddit users, including “zephxv,” reported experiencing the exact same response, also after asking unrelated questions. This has led to speculation and concern among users, with some wondering whether ChatGPT’s responses are being tampered with or if it's a technical issue involving user session data.

One Redditor suggested that recent issues might be due to prompts or context windows getting mixed up, saying, “I’ve had similar responses where it seems like the chat is replying to a completely different user’s prompt.”

The problem doesn’t seem limited to Reddit. About two weeks ago, a GitHub user reported what they called a “critical privacy breach.” According to the post, during a session with ChatGPT on April 6, 2025, they allegedly received another user's private information, including an admit card with full name, roll number, and even a photo, instead of a relevant response to their own uploaded files.

Another GitHub user described a similar issue—ChatGPT allegedly responding with information from earlier, unrelated chats.

In an attempt to understand the issue, one user asked ChatGPT directly, and the chatbot acknowledged that it “sounds like there may be a bug or technical issue causing a mix-up in the chat data.” ChatGPT explained that such unrelated responses could be due to a “server-side error or a malfunction in how data is being handled,” emphasizing that these kinds of mix-ups are not how the system is intended to function.

While the exact cause remains unclear, the recurring nature of these reports raises concerns about potential privacy and data handling issues within the platform.
