OpenAI has introduced a new subscription tier in India called ChatGPT Go, priced at ₹399 per month ($4.60). This plan is significantly cheaper than the ₹1,999 ($23) Plus Plan and supports payments through UPI, India’s digital payment system.
Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and head of ChatGPT, said the Go plan boosts usage limits for messages, image generation, and file uploads by ten times compared to the free tier. It also improves memory retention for more personalized responses.
Turley emphasized that affordability has been a major request from users. India is the first market to receive the Go plan, with expansion to other regions under consideration.
India has become a key market for OpenAI, with over 29 million app downloads in the past 90 days. Despite this, revenue from Indian users totaled just $3.6 million during that period. The new pricing aims to improve subscription rates.
Other AI companies are also targeting India’s massive internet user base. Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to offer free subscriptions, while Google launched a free AI Pro plan for students.
Although OpenAI isn’t offering free access, its localized pricing strategy is expected to attract more paying users in India.
