OpenAI Unveils GPT-4.1 Models with Major Performance Boosts

OpenAI has unveiled its latest AI model, GPT-4.1, alongside two smaller variants, GPT-4.1 Mini and GPT-4.1 Nano, highlighting significant advancements in coding, instruction-following, and understanding long contexts.

According to OpenAI, the new models available exclusively through its API, outperform the previous GPT-4o model in multiple areas. Specifically, GPT-4.1 demonstrates a 21% improvement in coding tasks compared to GPT-4o and a 27% edge over GPT-4.5. These enhancements make the GPT-4.1 lineup more capable for powering AI agents and real-world applications.

"Benchmarks are strong, but we focused on real-world utility, and developers seem very happy," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

In addition to performance upgrades, the new models come at a lower cost than GPT-4.5. As a result, OpenAI plans to retire the GPT-4.5 preview from its API in July, stating that GPT-4.1 offers equal or better performance.

GPT-4.5 was originally rolled out as a research preview in February, with OpenAI gradually expanding access to developers in the weeks that followed.
