Canadian airline WestJet experienced a cyberattack on Friday that disrupted some of its internal systems and affected access to its app and website.
“WestJet is aware of a cybersecurity incident involving internal systems and the WestJet app, which has limited access for several users,” the airline said in a statement.
The company is investigating the situation in collaboration with law enforcement and Transport Canada. It is also working to minimize the impact on its software and services.
“Our team is working quickly to protect the safety of our operations and to secure sensitive data and personal information belonging to both our guests and employees. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” WestJet stated.
In an update on Saturday, the airline confirmed that its operations had not been affected by the attack. It also said it was assessing the full scope of the incident. On Sunday, WestJet announced that users could once again access its app and website, although some service interruptions might still occur.
“WestJet is continuing to strengthen its digital environment and support the specialized teams handling the resolution of this issue,” the company said.
The airline has promised to keep the public informed with regular updates. However, it has not disclosed the nature of the cyberattack or whether any data was compromised. It remains unclear if ransomware was involved.
Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, WestJet offers scheduled passenger flights, charter services, and cargo transport. It is the second-largest airline in Canada and ranks eighth in North America based on flight frequency.
