The coffee and food service company Farmer Bros. has announced that a recent cyberattack exposed the personal information of more than 14,000 people.
According to a data breach notice, attackers accessed the company’s systems in early March of this year and remained on the network for nearly 12 days. Farmer Bros. launched an investigation as soon as the intrusion was detected and immediately notified law enforcement.
While the company’s notice redacts the specific types of information that were exposed, its decision to offer complimentary identity theft and credit monitoring services suggests that sensitive data like names, email addresses, and Social Security numbers may have been compromised.
Interestingly, the Chaos ransomware gang claimed responsibility for an attack on Farmer Bros. in early April, stating they stole 650GB of data. However, it is unclear if this claim is directly related to the data breach the company is now disclosing. Farmer Bros. primarily sells coffee, tea, and spices to businesses across the United States, with 2024 sales exceeding $340 million.
