The fintech firm Marquis suffered a security breach where hackers stole personal and financial data, affecting over 780,000 people.
Marquis is a Texas-based firm providing data-driven marketing, analytics, and compliance solutions to over 700 banks and credit unions across the U.S. It is a critical vendor in the community banking ecosystem, centralizing customer data for targeted campaigns and regulatory reporting.
Marquis Software detected a ransomware attack on August 14, 2025, which was traced to unauthorized access via its SonicWall firewall. The company immediately launched an investigation with cybersecurity experts and notified federal authorities. The company
confirmed that attackers may have stolen files and is issuing notifications on behalf of its affected business customers whose data it managed.
The official data breach notice sent to the Maine Attorney General's Office confirmed the ransomware attack detection on August 14, 2025. The investigation revealed an unauthorized third party accessed Marquis' network through its SonicWall firewall and may have acquired certain files. Marquis is providing notice for present and former business customers whose data it maintained.
Last week, Marquis began sending written notification letters to the affected individuals and filed data breach notices with various US state Attorney General's Offices. The exposed data includes personal information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and taxpayer identification numbers. Marquis stated it currently has no evidence of the misuse or attempted misuse of personal information resulting from this incident. The firm is notifying affected customers and offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
