Mount Rogers Community Services has appeared on the dark web leak site of a ransomware group, which claims to have stolen sensitive data from the organization’s systems.
Cybercriminals often target a wide range of institutions without concern for their purpose or impact. In this case, the INC Ransom group has listed Mount Rogers, a provider of mental health, developmental disability, and substance use services, as its latest victim.
Ransomware groups typically steal internal data and threaten to publish it unless a ransom is paid. To demonstrate their claim, the attackers have released samples of what they allege was taken. The leaked materials may not appear extremely sensitive, it still poses risks.
The exposed files reportedly include:
- Names
- Addresses
- Salary details
- Invoices
- Personal email addresses
- Internal messages
- Confidentiality agreements
Researchers believe this kind of information could be used for various malicious activities, such as phishing campaigns or identity theft.
They explained that payroll records, financial documents, and internal communications may serve as tools for social engineering or cyberattacks, potentially leading to further compromise of the organization’s systems. The data breach could also damage Mount Rogers’ reputation and result in both legal and financial consequences.
Mount Rogers is not alone in facing such threats. Community Counseling of Bristol County, a behavioral health facility, was recently attacked, with sensitive medical information being stolen. Earlier this month, the Mental Health Association in Georgia was also breached, and patient data including diagnoses and prescriptions was reportedly taken.
INC Ransom remains a major player among ransomware groups. Since first being identified in July 2023, the group has targeted a growing list of high-profile entities. Victims have included a U.S. Department of Defense contractor, Stark AeroSpace, the San Francisco Ballet, the City of Leicester in the UK, NHS Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, and Xerox.
