An Oregon-based provider of fencing and pet solutions, Jewett-Cameron Company, has confirmed it was hit by a cyberattack that resulted in the disruption of its operations and the theft of sensitive data.
Ransomware Attack Details
In a filing with the SEC, the company, which makes kennels, crates, fencing, and gardening products, disclosed that it detected the intrusion on October 15. Investigators determined that the hackers deployed "encryption and monitoring software" on corporate IT systems. This brief description strongly suggests the company is facing a double extortion ransomware attack, involving both file encryption and data theft.
The attack has temporarily prevented Jewett-Cameron from accessing certain business and operational applications. While the company believes the intrusion has been contained and is working to restore systems, the threat actors have already threatened to publicly release the stolen information unless a ransom is paid.
Stolen Data and Impact
The hackers appear to have obtained "images of video meetings and computer screens" that may contain sensitive company information. The company’s analysis indicates the exfiltrated data primarily relates to IT information and financial data that the company had been compiling for its upcoming Annual Report on Form 10-K, which is expected in mid November.
Jewett-Cameron believes the incident response costs will be covered by its cybersecurity insurance policy. However, the company acknowledged that the ongoing disruptions may still result in a material impact on its operations. To date, there is no evidence that the personal information of employees, customers, vendors, or suppliers has been compromised.
