Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 24H2 Updates Fail with 0x80240069 Error

Microsoft Confirms WSUS Block for Windows 11 24H2 Updates Following April 2025 Patch

Microsoft has acknowledged a critical issue affecting enterprise environments where devices are unable to receive Windows 11 24H2 feature updates through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) after applying the April 2025 Patch Tuesday updates.

WSUS, formerly known as Software Update Services (SUS), has long served as a centralized tool allowing IT administrators to manage updates across enterprise networks. However, following the April 8, 2025 security update (starting with KB5055528), administrators are encountering 0x80240069 errors and update failures on systems running Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2.

According to Microsoft, the update problem stems from the Windows Update Service (wuauserv) halting unexpectedly, which prevents downloads of the Windows 11 24H2 update from initiating or completing. The issue has been widely reported across platforms such as Reddit and Microsoft’s own forums.

“Devices which have installed the April Windows monthly security update, released April 8, 2025, or later… might be unable to update to Windows 11 24H2 via WSUS,” the company stated in a Windows release health advisory. Microsoft clarified that home users are not impacted, as WSUS is primarily used in business environments.

Though Microsoft deprecated WSUS in September 2024, it assured users that update delivery through the system would continue. WSUS was also included in the list of features phased out starting with Windows Server 2025. Despite earlier plans to remove WSUS driver synchronization, Microsoft has postponed its removal indefinitely based on user feedback.

In a related issue, Microsoft is investigating a bug that causes some systems to upgrade to Windows 11 despite being restricted by Intune policies. A similar incident in November 2024 saw devices running Windows Server 2019 and 2022 upgraded to Windows Server 2025 without administrator consent.
