Polish Space Agency Targeted in Cyberattack, Minister Confirms

Polish Space Agency Targeted in Cyberattack, Minister Confirms

Poland’s cybersecurity services have detected unauthorized access to the IT infrastructure of the Polish Space Agency (POLSA), prompting an immediate security response.

The incident was confirmed by Minister for Digitalisation Krzysztof Gawkowski, who addressed the matter publicly on Sunday.

"In connection with the incident, the systems under attack were secured," Gawkowski stated on social media platform X. He further emphasized that intensive operational activities are underway to identify those responsible for the cyberattack, as authorities work diligently to contain any potential data breaches and assess the full scope of the intrusion.

The Polish Space Agency confirmed the cybersecurity breach in a statement to Polska Agencja Prasowa (PAP), revealing that an internal investigation is in progress to analyze the nature and impact of the attack. As a precautionary measure, the agency immediately disconnected its network from the Internet to prevent further unauthorized access and mitigate any potential risks.

This cyber incident comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region. In recent years, Warsaw has repeatedly accused Moscow of orchestrating cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns aimed at destabilizing Poland. The Polish government has pointed to the country’s role in supplying military aid to Ukraine as a reason for these alleged cyber threats. However, Russia has consistently denied any involvement in such activities.

The latest breach at POLSA highlights growing concerns over cybersecurity vulnerabilities in critical national institutions, especially those involved in aerospace research, defense collaborations, and advanced technological projects. Security analysts warn that cyberattacks targeting government agencies and scientific institutions could have far-reaching consequences, including potential data theft, intelligence gathering, or even sabotage.

As Poland ramps up its defensive cybersecurity measures, the government has pledged to enhance digital security frameworks and collaborate with international cybersecurity agencies to strengthen its national infrastructure against future threats.

For now, authorities remain focused on identifying the perpetrators and assessing the extent of the damage, while ensuring that Poland's space research and defense operations remain safeguarded from potential cyber threats.
