MTN Group Confirms Cybersecurity Breach, Some Subscriber Data Exposed
Africa’s largest mobile network operator, MTN Group, has confirmed a cybersecurity breach that led to unauthorized access to customer data in certain regions. While the full extent of the incident is still under investigation, MTN says its core network, billing systems, and financial infrastructure remain secure.
With nearly 300 million users across 20 countries, the telecom giant emphasized that no customer wallets or financial accounts appear to have been compromised. However, an unidentified third party has claimed to have accessed sensitive data.
The company has notified law enforcement and relevant data protection authorities and says impacted customers will be contacted directly.
To safeguard against potential misuse, MTN is urging users to:
- Place a fraud alert on their credit reports.
- Keep apps and devices updated.
- Use strong, unique passwords.
- Avoid suspicious messages or links.
- Never share PINs, passwords, or OTPs.
- Enable two-factor authentication where available.
No ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of now.
