Microsoft has lifted a compatibility block that had been preventing certain users of Easy Anti-Cheat from installing the Windows 11 2024 Update due to a known issue that caused unexpected restarts and blue screen of death (BSOD) errors.
The company first acknowledged the problem last month, confirming that it affected systems running Easy Anti-Cheat, a widely used anti-cheating tool included with numerous multiplayer games such as Apex Legends, War Thunder, Dead by Daylight, ELDEN RING, Rust, Squad, NBA 2K25, and many others.
To address the issue, Microsoft released an emergency patch (KB5063060) for Windows 24H2 systems on June 11. This came after multiple reports of reboots and BSODs linked to crashes in files like ntoskrnl.exe and EasyAntiCheat_EOS.exe while playing games like Fortnite.
More than a month after rolling out the fix, Microsoft has now removed the block that stopped Easy Anti-Cheat users from upgrading to the latest version of Windows 11.
According to Microsoft, “The safeguard hold has been removed as of July 24, 2025. Eligible devices that are not affected by other blocks can now install Windows 11, version 24H2 through Windows Update.”
The company also noted that some users may see a warning about an incompatible version of Easy Anti-Cheat. In such cases, updating the affected games may allow the user to proceed with the installation.
Microsoft clarified that the BSOD issue will not occur just because an outdated version of Easy Anti-Cheat is present on the system. The crash would only happen if the tool is activated through a game.
Back in October, Microsoft placed a separate safeguard hold on Intel Alder Lake+ and vPro systems to prevent 24H2 updates due to issues with Easy Anti-Cheat and crashes in Asphalt 8. That restriction was lifted in March after the problem was resolved, with users advised to restart their computers to receive the update faster.
In addition to this, Microsoft recently removed other compatibility holds that had blocked users of AutoCAD and Safe Exam Browser from installing the Windows 11 2024 Update because of problems related to launching or crashing.
