Microsoft Teams Now Lets Users Add Bots and Agents Right Into Ongoing Conversations

Microsoft is preparing to transform how users interact with AI agents and bots in Teams by introducing a more streamlined integration experience beginning in June 2025.

This enhanced system will first be released to a random group of users across Teams for Windows desktop, Teams for Mac desktop, and Teams on the web. The limited rollout is part of an experimental phase aimed at collecting user feedback and performance insights before a broader launch.

The update focuses on improving user experience by replacing the current pop-up window model, which often disrupts workflows. Previously, when users clicked the people roster icon in the upper-right corner of Chat or Channels, a pop-up interface appeared that temporarily blocked ongoing conversations. The new design introduces a side panel interface that preserves chat visibility while allowing users to access the “Add agents and bots” option.

This right-hand sidebar lets users browse, choose, and connect AI agents without leaving their active communication space. Conversations remain fully accessible throughout the selection process, addressing common complaints about the limited functionality of the earlier pop-up system.

Microsoft plans to complete the Targeted Release (Worldwide) phase between early and late June 2025.

The rollout requires no administrative action from IT teams. Microsoft is using automated deployment tools within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, so organizations will not need to make changes to tenant settings or Azure Active Directory.

The update also maintains compatibility with existing app integrations in Teams. The familiar “+” icon at the top of Chat and Channels will continue to support tab-based apps throughout the testing period. This approach allows users who prefer the traditional method to continue using it while Microsoft gathers data on the new system’s usage.

According to Microsoft, the change was prompted by feedback pointing out that the old dialog system caused unnecessary time pressure and workflow disruptions, especially during team collaboration. The newly introduced panel resolves those issues and keeps full access to the Teams app and bot framework.

To support a smooth transition, organizations are encouraged to update their internal guides and notify users about the new AI integration feature in Teams.
