Mastercard Launches AI Tool to Fight Card Fraud in Africa and Beyond

Mastercard has launched Account Intelligence Reissuance, an advanced fraud prevention tool designed to simplify and strengthen the card replacement process across Eastern

Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EEMEA). This service uses Mastercard’s proprietary artificial intelligence technology and network insights to evaluate the risk level of individual cards and provide AI-powered recommendations on whether cards should be monitored or reissued.

Card fraud causes significant financial losses for both card issuers and merchants. To minimize these risks, issuers often identify compromised primary account numbers (PANs) and reissue new cards to customers. However, this approach can be expensive and time-consuming, often requiring manual review. Mastercard’s Account Intelligence Reissuance automates and simplifies this process, enhancing fraud prevention efforts for both physical and digital card skimming incidents.

“At Mastercard, we’ve developed a robust suite of fraud prevention tools that offer deep, actionable insights. With Account Intelligence Reissuance, we’re giving issuers the ability to consolidate data, assess risk, and prioritize the reissuance of the most vulnerable cards. Backed by our powerful AI technology, this solution provides a more accurate and efficient way to fight card fraud and protect customers,” said Selin Bahadirli, Executive Vice President of Services for EEMEA at Mastercard.

As the digital economy grows and new fraud tactics emerge, Mastercard continues to evolve its security capabilities to protect both businesses and consumers throughout the payment process. With Decision Intelligence, Mastercard helps detect and prevent fraud across the company’s 159 billion annual transactions. Recent generative AI enhancements have further enabled issuers to quickly analyze account, transaction, merchant, and device data, making real-time fraud detection more effective.

Mastercard is also advancing AI innovation through its Center for Advanced AI and Cyber Technology in Dubai. This center, developed in partnership with the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications Office, is focused on strengthening AI expertise and preparedness across the region. The AI solutions being developed at the center are supporting the detection of cyberattacks, data breaches, and fraudulent activities, ultimately making digital interactions safer for governments, banks, merchants, and consumers.

The Account Intelligence Reissuance service is expected to be introduced in Asia Pacific, North America, and Latin America later this year
